Naomi Ning is a Chinese American artist, born and raised in Singapore but currently based in Detroit. She works primarily in mixed media with a focus on acrylic paint, colored pencil, and digital media. She is drawn to vibrant colors as well as crowded scenes in her art. She mainly creates small-scale art pieces because of the intimacy that can convey and because she prefers to create work that can be displayed even in the smallest of spaces, having grown up in an environment where space was premium and often limited.
Her current body of work is centered around moments of joy and connectedness between people expressed through food and interactions. It marks a shift from her previous work that was largely self-focused on expressing emotions of depression, shame and anxiety. Her goal with her art now is to build connections with her queer and Asian American communities through positive portrayals of queer and Asian people experiencing moments of contentment.
